Beating Arthritis

Regardless of how your loved one is affected by arthritis, there are ways you can help alleviate the stiffness, pain, and fatigue caused by the disease.

Nearly 40 million Americans have arthritis. Most forms are chronic, and most individuals with arthritis will require care at some point in their lives. Arthritis can affect the areas in and around the joints, or it can affect these areas and other body parts such as the skin and internal organs.

As a caregiver you can help by encouraging your loved one to:

  • Visit several doctors specializing in joint disorders to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment
  • Consult regularly with his or her doctor about the condition
  • Avoid the false promises of products that will “cure” arthritis or its symptoms
  • Carefully balance rest and physical activity
  • Take his or her medication in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Do complete range of motion or flexibility exercises daily without overstressing the joints
  • Get enough sleep
  • Stay educated about the disease and new clinical research findings
  • Maintain a positive attitude about the physical and emotional difficulties that come with the illness
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Maintain a weight within the individual’s range, as specified by a doctor

Do what you can to help your loved one develop a lifestyle which includes the above, and ask if there are other ways you can help. Remember to be positive rather than demanding. You may choose to follow some of these suggestions yourself, to offer support to your loved one. This has the added benefit of making your own lifestyle healthier.
